2008 priorities of First United Methodist
Church of Blytheville
Priority
One:
Every member in the church will give and receive
ministry.
The
mission of the church will continue to be its top priority. Each member of
the church family will be responsible for ministering to others, and each
in turn, will receive the ministry of others, in accordance with the
teachings and examples of Jesus.
Priority
Two:
The facility will be renovated and improved to maximize its use and to
meet the current and future needs of the congregation.
The
current structure, while large and attractive, does not meet the needs of
the congregation. Adequate handicapped accessibility, a meeting/dining
space large enough to accommodate the entire membership, and a
recreational space are some of the assets that would enhance the ministry
and growth potential of the church.
Priority
Three:
The church will bolster its membership in terms of
overall expansion, involvement of current members, attractiveness to
younger members and strengthened leadership.
The church
recognizes the need for young, active membership. It recognizes also that
its perpetual growth depends on strong leadership and active involvement
of the majority of members, and consistent, aggressive programs will be
enacted to bring new members and motivate the current membership toward
greater involvement in all aspects of the church.
Priority
Four:
The Church will focus on education as a primary means of building
Disciples of Christ.
Education will center
on the essential elements of Christianity and Methodism, including the
Bible, for greater scriptural literacy; stewardship, to develop
understanding of the full meaning of giving; Methodist principles, to
build appreciation for our founding beliefs; and Christian leadership, to
guide the growth of stronger Christians.
Priority
Five:
The church will continue a strong and vital mission
program.
As a basic
principle of Christianity, mission will be included in the work of all
committees, and members will be encouraged to identify mission
opportunities both within the community and outside it.
Priority
Six:
The stewardship program of the church will be
broadened.
Stewardship is
too often considered as a once-a-year quest to solicit monetary pledges.
The program will change to include year-round education and opportunities,
thus raising awareness of the importance of stewardship in the life of
Christians.
